What Is Treatment-Resistant Depression? 🧠
Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) is defined as depression that does not fully respond after two or more adequate antidepressant trials. Research suggests that between 30–60% of patients with major depression do not achieve full recovery with standard medication alone. We like to call it “difficult to treat depression” and we use many interventional novel ways to treat it.
TRD is not a single, simple condition — it is a broad category that may include:
- Older adults with vascular or cardiovascular disease
- Patients with bipolar features not yet identified
- Those with underlying inflammatory conditions
- Individuals with trauma, chronic stress, or unaddressed psychosocial factors — trauma history can mimic Bipolar Disorder a great deal
- People with metabolic issues, thyroid dysfunction, or nutritional deficiencies
⚠️ Not responding to your first antidepressant does not mean you are “out of options.” It means your care plan needs a closer look and Providers need to stay up on the latest research of medications, interventions and other holistic approaches to treatment.
Advanced Psychiatric Treatments We Offer ✨
At Renew Wellness, we specialize in evidence-based advanced options for patients who have not responded to standard treatments:
Ketamine Therapy
IV and IM ketamine infusions can produce rapid antidepressant effects, often within hours to days. May be especially helpful when other treatments have failed.
Spravato (Esketamine)
FDA-approved nasal spray administered in-office for TRD and MDD with suicidal ideation. Covered by some insurance plans.
TMS Therapy
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation — a non-invasive, drug-free brain stimulation therapy. FDA-cleared for depression, OCD, and anxiety.
Medication Optimization
Review of current medications for effectiveness, interactions, dosing, and alternative options including novel agents.
